Sunglasses - more than a fashion statementLonger days are here, and you’re probably spending more time outside. If your sunglasses have spent the winter in hibernation, it’s time to dig them out.

Eye safety first

To keep your eyes healthy, make sure all your sunglasses protect against ultraviolet (UV) rays. The sun’s UV rays can damage your eyes and wrinkle your skin. Exposure to UV light is associated with cataracts and growths around the eyes.

There are two types of UV rays, UVA and UVB. When you buy sunglasses, check the label. It should say the sunglasses block or absorb 99% to 100% of all UV rays. Every pair of sunglasses sold at Oregon Eye Specialists’ Sight Shops has UV protection.

About polarized lenses

Polarized lenses help you see better in bright light by cutting down on glare.Oakley sunglasses for her If you like to boat or fish, you might already own a pair or two. They can help you spot fish beneath the water by reducing surface reflection and make it more comfortable for you to be out on the water.

Other activities that can be easier with polarized lenses include:

  • Driving – Polarized lenses cut down on glare from pavement, car windows and shiny surfaces, making road trips less tiring.
  • Golf
  • Running
  • Nordic skiing and snowshoeing

Caution: polarized lenses can make it hard to read LCD screens. In a car or boat, this can make it harder to see the instrument panel, GPS or other equipment, so check before you drive. On snow or water, polarized lenses can cut reflections enough to make it hard to “read” the slopes or the waves. This can be dangerous if you miss seeing an icy patch or rough water.

If your eyes are sensitive to bright light, polarized lenses could make you more comfortable. Check with your eye doctor first to make sure there is no serious cause. Some people wear polarized lenses after cataract surgery, when the eyes are more sensitive to light for a while.

The latest polarized lenses

The Transitions Vantage adaptive lenses are the latest in polarized lens technology. Indoors, the lenses are almost clear, and they darken and polarize in the sun. Transitions Vantage lenses are not yet widely available, but should be soon.
